Why trust us
As a co-founder and Head of Payroll at Monograph, I personally spent over three months evaluating, writing code against, and doing business due diligence before selecting our Embedded Payroll API vendor. Subsequently we launched payroll, sold and onboarded customers, ran millions of dollars worth of payroll, and learned even more what to look for in a Payroll API vendor.
Check
4.7 ✦✦✦✦✧
Overview
Pioneering embedded payroll, Check leads the way with a substantially mature Payroll API infrastructure and a tight focus on developer-centricity. As the most seasoned platform, they've encountered and addressed numerous edge cases, solidifying product robustness. They also consistently expand functionality through new API endpoints and webhooks, as documented in their changelog. The velocity and shipping cadence is impressive for a company working in such a regulated and compliance-oriented market.
As with all platforms, Check does have a few areas to note as they’re learning how to scale within the enterprise. As the veritable industry leader, Check has less pressure to step out of their payroll lane to provide features that other competitors need to differentiate like international support or time and attendance features. Notably, enterprises like Service Titan experienced limitations with Check, prompting a platform change.
Despite a few shortcomings, we recommend starting your procurement process with Check, the industry leader in Embedded Payroll.
Pros
Embedded payroll is Check’s first and primary product on the market today.
Alumni from Stripe, Plaid, Goldman Sachs, and Blackstone, this leadership team is full of strong operators and know how to move lots of money on the internet, compliantly.
As one of the first engineers at Check, Ian Zapolsky nows heads the Partner Engineering org at Check. Check creates a shared Slack channel that anyone can join to ask questions.
Check works hand-in-hand during initial product launch. They’ve built a product playbook to get you to market in as little as 3-4 weeks (Dripos and Monograph both launched in less than a month).
Cons
When compared to other embedded providers, Check does not currently offer a way to use pre-built components and instead needs calls to injected scripts or requires embedded iframes. For the most part it’s not a big issue, but does limit how much you can style and customize without going full API.
Check is on the pricier side, but they do earn their contract value through proactive professional services and experience working with so many companies that have successfully shipped payroll.
Ruthlessly honed-in on being a robust payroll provider, Check maintains a tight roadmap avoiding features outside the direct payroll scope. International support, time and attendance, daily pay, etc are not part of their current focus.
Gusto Embedded
4.6 ✦✦✦✦✧
Overview
Gusto knows payroll—Gusto embedded payroll is your ticket to quickly integrating payroll and HR features into your platform without the hassle of starting from square one. Just keep in mind, there's some admin stuff like commercial discussions, security checks, and setup talks with Gusto's partnerships team before you can hit the ground running with your coding.
Pros
With a decade of running billions of dollars in payroll, Gusto can leverage their large support staff for you when the beginning of the year support crunch hits.
Time is critical to running accurate payroll runs and Gusto helps by ensuring you are capturing time off and accrued time and pass it directly to payroll.
At a pre-IPO stage, Gusto wants to capture marketshare in the payroll space thus they’re incentivized to acquire as many customers as possible. From talking with Gusto Embedded customers, they are offering attractive platform rates in an effort to build momentum.
Cons
While end-user Gusto has a standalone benefits platform, for their embedded product they’ve started by working with SimplyInsured. Our experience working with SimplyInsured was less than ideal. The platform is buggy and hard to use. Having our customers interface with benefit sign up via email is has also been an issue. The experience has been confirmed working with other companies as well.
While not currently available, a 401k offering appears to be on the upcoming roadmap.
While Gusto support capacity is seen as a “pro” their reviews around customer support (and some second-hand experience) reveals that support is not highly rated. Public reviews don’t tell the whole story but I would tread lightly here as they also have a huge user base to support
